Slack workspace value calculator
Every Slack workspace builds up years of real work conversation, and AI developers license that kind of material to train assistants for the workplace. Tell the calculator how big your workspace is, which plan you are on and how your channels are used, and it works out how many messages you can actually export and keep after removing bots, social chatter and private messages. It then prices what is left by channel type.
From messages sent to usable messages
Each step removes messages a buyer cannot get or would not pay for.
Value by channel type
| Channel type | Usable messages | Weight | Low | High | Share |
|---|
How the workspace is valued
Slack data is priced per usable message. The calculator first works out how many messages your plan still holds and lets you export, then removes anything that is not real work conversation.
Count every message
sent = members × messages per day × 250 × years
Apply plan limits
Free workspaces lose everything older than one year. Free and Pro export public channels only; Business+ and Enterprise Grid can export private channels and, if you choose, direct messages.
Remove bots and social chatter
Integration messages and social channels are taken out using the shares you set.
usable = exportable × (1 − bots) × (1 − social)
Price by channel type
Each usable message is worth $0.0008 to $0.004, times the channel weight: engineering 1.3, support 1.25, sales 1.1, operations 1.0.
Adjust for industry, language and redaction
Industry 0.9 to 1.4×, English share between 40 and 100 percent, and redaction 0.6 to 1.0.
Questions about the value of Slack data
Why would AI companies want Slack messages?
Workplace chat shows how teams actually solve problems: someone asks, others suggest, a decision is made. That back and forth is what AI assistants for work need to learn, and almost none of it is public. Engineering and support channels are the most valuable because they contain complete problem and solution threads.
Can I export all my Slack messages?
It depends on your plan. On Free and Pro, workspace owners can export public channels. Business+ and Enterprise Grid can export private channels and direct messages as well, usually after a request to Slack. The calculator only counts what your plan lets you export.
What happens to old messages on the Slack free plan?
Since August 2024, Slack deletes messages and files older than one year on free workspaces. Anything older is gone for good, so it cannot be licensed. If your workspace has history worth keeping, upgrading before more of it is deleted is worth considering.
Should direct messages be included?
Usually not. Direct messages are the most personal part of a workspace, and employees may reasonably expect them to stay private. Most data deals leave them out, which is why they are excluded by default. Including them needs a clear legal basis and employee notice.
How are bot and social messages handled?
Alerts from integrations, deployment notices and automated reminders are removed because they are not human conversation. Social channels such as random or watercooler are also removed, since they add little and raise privacy questions.
